See where they'll be living
Two minutes filmed with our guests in the houses they live in: the rooms, the kitchens where dinners happen, and the team on the ground in Obs.
Your child won’t land in Cape Town alone.
Your son or daughter isn’t renting a room. They’re moving into a house full of other international students and interns who arrived the same week, on the same kind of program, just as far from home. Within days they’re cooking dinner together and swapping stories about home.
Observatory, straight.
We won’t pretend the warnings don’t exist. Observatory is a real city neighbourhood, one of Cape Town’s most popular student areas, close to the universities, with an active Observatory Improvement District. It also has a visible homeless population, and we give every guest simple, street-smart tips on arrival. We will never tell you the neighbourhood is risk-free. We show you the hardware instead.
How the houses are secured
Every freestanding house except 317 Lower Main (7 Stanley, 49 Milton, 73 Arnold, 89 Station, 91 Station, 197 Lower Main):
- Electric fencing
- Monitored alarm system with emergency panic buttons
- CCTV at entrances and shared outdoor areas
- Fire alarm with monitored response
317 Lower Main has electric fencing, CCTV, burglar bars and a fire alarm, but no monitored house alarm.
The three lofts at 5 Howe Street (F1, G7, L7) sit inside an access-controlled building with 24-hour security and cameras, and each loft has its own fire alarm.
When an alarm trips, a security company is watching. That’s the difference between a warning and a plan.
A real person answers, 7 days a week
- Office open 7 days a week: Monday to Friday 9 AM to 5 PM, Saturday and Sunday 9 AM to 4 PM
- Every house has its own WhatsApp group, read by the team in office hours, and Renti, our assistant, answers on WhatsApp at +27 82 661 9338 at any hour
- For an ambulance, guests call Netcare 911 on 082 911 (their travel insurance covers it). For fire, crime or a break-in, 112 or the police on 10111, then Observatory neighbourhood security on 021 447 1066, which answers 24 hours a day
“Our son stayed with VaCorps in Cape Town and rented a room via RentARoom. He was very happy there and lived together with other students, they cooked and did the washing together. The room and area seemed to be safe and clean.” Alex Agudo, parent
The room is ready before they arrive
Furnished room with a comfortable bed and fresh linen, towel, travel adapter and starter essentials, so there is no shopping run on night one. Free WiFi, water included, TV with Netflix, a fully equipped shared kitchen and laundry machines in every house. Shared areas are cleaned twice a week, with fresh linen on request. Inverters and battery backup keep lights and key plug points running through any power outage at every house except 317 Lower Main, so they can keep studying, working and charging.

The house rules, in plain words
Quiet hours 10 PM to 8 AM. Day visitors 8 AM to 10 PM, overnight guests with written permission. No smoking indoors, no animals, no heaters. Lock the door and close the gate every time. The full set, the same rules your child signs in their Guest Agreement, is here: House Rules.
No lock-in
If your child arrives and the house isn’t right, they tell us by email within the first 7 days and we move them to another available Rent-A-Room property or refund the unused balance of their stay. No penalty. We charge by the day, so dates match their program, not a 12-month lease. For longer stays, after those first 7 days a standard 30-day move-out notice applies. You’re not gambling a year’s rent on photos from overseas.
