Accommodation Built Around
Your Internship

An internship abroad has a shape: fixed dates, full workdays, and a short window to get the most out of a new city. Your accommodation should match that shape — and a 12-month lease, a solo Airbnb, or a hostel dorm doesn't.

Rent-A-Room runs 96 furnished private rooms across 10 shared houses in Observatory — Obs, once you've been here a week — and has done since 2004. Every booking is your own private room inside a house shared with other interns and students, most of them on similar program dates to yours. Most of our interns stay between four and twelve weeks, and the houses are set up for exactly that rhythm: work during the day, a full kitchen of people to come home to, and weekends free for the rest of the country.

You arrive alone. You don't stay that way for long.

Built for Interns Coming to Cape Town

We house full-time university students, semester and exchange students, and international students on shorter academic stays — the people a standard 12-month lease was never designed for.

  • Program Interns

Coming through an internship placement program with fixed cohort dates. Your housemates will mostly be arriving and leaving on the same rhythm — which is exactly what makes the houses work.

  • Independent and Graduate Interns

Arranged your own placement at a Cape Town company, hospital, NGO, or startup. We handle the housing side so your first week is about the job, not the logistics.

  • Young Remote Workers and Nomads

Working your own job from a new city for a few months. A private room to work from, backup power that keeps you online, and a house of people to log off with.

Preferred Housing Provider for VAC Cape Town

If you're coming to Cape Town with VACorps, you're in familiar hands, Rent-A-Room is their preferred housing provider, and we've housed their interns for years. Your airport collection and check-in are coordinated directly between the VACorps team and ours, so from the arrivals hall to your front door, it's already arranged.

Coming with a different program, or on your own? The same machinery works for you: tell us your program dates, and an after-hours airport shuttle and check-in can be arranged so a late flight is never a problem.

Booked to Your Program Dates

Internship dates don't come in 12-month blocks, so our pricing doesn't either. Stays run from two weeks up to a year, booked to your exact dates. Stays of less than 4 months are billed monthly from $713, and stays of 4 months or more get a discounted monthly Rand rate. If your program runs 9 June to 22 August, that's precisely what you pay for.

What Every House Comes With

In Your Room

A fully furnished private room, made up before you arrive — bed, bedding, towels, storage, and space to work when you need a quiet hour. Fresh linen changes and regular professional cleaning are part of every stay.

In the House

A shared, fully equipped kitchen, communal living spaces, laundry facilities, and free WiFi. Several houses add their own extras — braai areas, gardens, lounges with Smart TVs — shown on each room listing.

Behind the Scenes

Every house runs inverters and backup lighting, so load-shedding never costs you a deadline, a video call, or a lit house after dark. And every house is secured with its own hardware: electric fencing, monitored alarms, CCTV.

Amenities vary slightly by house — each listing on Find A Room shows exactly what that home includes.

Questions Interns Ask Us

Most interns book from another continent, sight unseen, so the questions tend to be the same ones: dates, arrivals, safety, and whether the WiFi holds up. Straight answers below, and we're a message away for anything else.

Can my booking match my exact program dates?

Yes, that's the model. Stays run from two weeks up to a year and are booked to your exact dates, so your booking starts and ends with your program. Stays of less than 4 months are billed monthly in USD, and stays of 4 months or more get a discounted monthly Rand rate.

Can I work from the house?

Yes. Every house has free WiFi, your room gives you a quiet place to work, and inverters with backup lighting keep things running through load-shedding.

I'm coming with VACorps, how does it work?

Your airport collection and check-in are coordinated directly between VACorps and our team. By the time you land, your room and your arrival plan are already arranged.

Will there be other interns in my house?

The houses are shared by interns and students from around the world, most on similar program dates. Arriving with a cohort or arriving alone, you'll be sharing a kitchen with people at the same stage as you.

What if my flight lands late at night?

An after-hours airport shuttle and check-in can be arranged, so a midnight arrival still ends with you checked in and asleep in your own room.

Is Observatory safe for interns?

Our houses are secured with electric fencing, monitored alarms, and CCTV, and they're managed by our own team. Obs itself is a lively neighbourhood that asks for street smarts, so we give every arrival an honest local briefing on getting around, and our local team is on hand by email and WhatsApp throughout your stay.
