Student Accommodation in Observatory, Cape Town
Furnished private rooms in shared student houses, for stays from two weeks to a full academic year. Move into a home that's ready the day you land, minutes from UCT, with housemates from around the world already in the kitchen.
More Than a Room
Near Campus
Most student accommodation is one of two things: a dorm with no privacy, or a solo flat with no people. We built a third thing.
Rent-A-Room runs 96 furnished private rooms across 10 shared houses in Observatory (Obs, once you've been here a week) and has done since 2004. Every booking is your own private room, with your own door to close, inside a house shared with other international and local students, exchange students, and interns. Your housemates arrive the way you do: new to the city, here for a semester or a stretch of months, looking for people to figure Cape Town out with.
That's the model. The room is where you sleep and study. The house is where the semester actually happens.

Built for Students Coming to Cape Town
We house full-time university students, semester and exchange students, and international students on shorter academic stays, the people a standard 12-month lease was never designed for.
-
University Students
At UCT, CPUT, UWC and nearby institutions, for anyone who wants a furnished base in a student neighbourhood, without buying a bed, a kettle, and a year-long lease.
-
Exchange and Semester-Abroad Students
Your dates are fixed by your program, not by the South African rental market. Your booking matches your academic calendar exactly.
-
Elective and Visiting Students
Here for a few weeks or months. Observatory sits right beside UCT's medical campus and Groote Schuur Hospital, making it a natural base for electives and short academic programs.

Intern AccommodationStudent Accommodation That Fits Your Dates
The standard Cape Town rental market runs on 12-month leases. A semester doesn't. An exchange doesn't. An elective definitely doesn't.
So we book you to your exact dates instead. Stays run from two weeks up to a year. Stays of less than 4 months are billed monthly from $713, and stays of 4 months or more get a discounted monthly Rand rate. You pay for the time you're here, not for the months you're not.
What Every House Comes With
In Your Room
A fully furnished private room, made up before you arrive: bed, bedding, towels, storage, and a space to study. Fresh linen changes and regular professional cleaning are part of every stay, not an extra.
In the House
A shared, fully equipped kitchen, communal living spaces, laundry facilities, and free WiFi. Several houses add their own extras (braai areas, gardens, lounges with Smart TVs) which you'll see on each room listing.
Behind the Scenes
Every house runs inverters and backup lighting, so load-shedding doesn't shut down your study schedule. And every house is secured with its own hardware: electric fencing, monitored alarms, CCTV.
Amenities vary slightly by house, each listing on Find A Room shows exactly what that home includes.

Find A RoomQuestions Students (and Parents) Ask Us
Everything international students, interns, and their parents need to know about safety, logistics, and co-living with us in Observatory, Cape Town.
What's the minimum stay?
Two weeks. We don't take shorter bookings (we're student and intern accommodation, not a holiday let) and stays run up to a full year.
What's included in the rate?
The furnished private room, bedding and towels, regular professional cleaning, shared laundry, WiFi, and the shared kitchen and living spaces. Rates start from $713 per month.
How close will I be to UCT?
About 5 to 10 minutes. Observatory is one of the closest student neighbourhoods to UCT's main campuses, and the medical campus and Groote Schuur Hospital border the suburb.
What happens during load-shedding?
Every house runs inverters and backup lighting, so the lights stay on and you can keep studying when the grid goes down.
Is Observatory safe for students?
Our houses are secured with electric fencing, monitored alarms, and CCTV, and they're managed by our own team based right here. Obs itself is a lively student neighbourhood that asks for street smarts, so we give every student an honest local briefing on how to get around, and our local team is on hand by email and WhatsApp throughout your stay.
Can my parents speak to someone before I book?
Yes. Bookings go through a real person on our team, and we're happy to answer questions from students and parents before anything is confirmed.
