Local Weather
Cape Town Weather & Planning for your stay
Cape Town Weather: What to expect
Cape Town boasts a “Mediterranean” climate, characterised by mild and wet winters, as well as famously sunny, warm, and dry summers.
Summer attracts visitors to Cape Town, who relish the long, sun-drenched days. However, there’s no need to be deterred by the term “winter.” Cape Town’s winters bear little resemblance to the harsh cold of many northern hemisphere cities. Winters can be rainy, but are comparatively mild and temperate.
The hottest and driest months occur from November to March, with daytime temperatures occasionally reaching the high 90s (above 35 degrees Celsius), though typically remaining below 80°F (27°C). July and August mark the wettest and coldest months, yet they can still be relatively mild, offering numerous sunny and relatively warm days between occasional cold fronts and rainstorms. Winter temperatures typically have daytime highs of around 13°C to 18°C (55°F to 64°F) and night-time lows of around 7°C to 10°C (45°F to 50°F).
Session 1: January – April
This is a popular time to join us in Cape Town and the weather is glorious. The city is full of tourists, and is lively and bustling during this summer season, with long daylight hours, great for post work outdoor activities.
Session 2: May – August
During this season, the city experiences milder temperatures as the summer heat diminishes, and the summer winds subside. The city transforms from dry summer browns to lush winter greens, with the majority of the annual rainfall occurring. The winter season alternates between cold and stormy spells, followed by warmer sunny days. This season coincides with the Northern hemisphere summer holidays, so it’s the busiest time for us in housing.
Session 3: September – December
This season is characterised by warmer weather, longer days, and a blooming landscape, creating a festive atmosphere. It’s an excellent time for outdoor activities, such as hikes in the mountains. The housing is quieter during this season, offering a better chance to secure preferred houses / rooms. If your schedule allows, coming during this time is highly recommended

Packing List
Things to Bring in Your Carry-on
We recommend packing some basic toiletries and a change of clothes in your carry-on. It’s a great way to avoid any hassle if your checked bag happens to go missing!
Also, don’t forget to bring any essential medications with you. It’s a good idea to have a copy of your prescription handy, and please keep your medications in their original packaging to ensure everything goes smoothly.
What to Pack
General Packing Guidelines:
- Pack lightly since most items are readily available in Cape Town!
- Please avoid bringing anything irreplaceable, like cherished keepsakes or valuable jewellery.
- For added safety, keep your valuable electronics, like laptops, in your carry-on luggage.
- Travel-sized toiletries are great for reducing weight and preventing spills!
- Be sure to check luggage weight restrictions and leave some extra capacity for any shopping you might want to do.
South African Plugs and Voltage:
- In South Africa, the electricity is 220 Volts AC. While many electronic devices can accept 110V or 220V, please check that your hairdryers and straighteners will work before bringing them along!
- South African plugs differ in shape, typically featuring 3-prong or 2-prong round pins. Don’t worry, we’ll provide you with a travel adapter in your room! If you do want to purchase one we recommend getting one here as they are much cheaper in South Africa
Year-round Packing List: (See below for Session Specifics)
- A day backpack that can fit your laptop (perfect for carry-on!)
- Comfortable shoes for hiking/running, sandals, and a pair for work.
- Your swimsuit or board shorts, even in winter!
- Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses (they're useful year-round!).
- A couple of nice outfits for city outings.
- Work clothes for your internship.
- Casual weekend/after-work clothes.
- Clothes suitable for hiking and exercise.
- Emergency cash: around $500 is recommended for exchanging to Rands, just in case you misplace your wallet or cards. Some excursions offer discounts if you pay in cash!
- Your electronics (laptop, smartphone, charging cables, tablet, GoPro, etc.).
- Your prescribed medications in their original bottles, along with your prescriptions.
- Your passport, printed flight confirmations, and copies of important documents.
- Your student card (for potential discounts and as a form of ID).
- Your debit and credit cards.
Packing for Session 1: January to March
- Expect warm weather, with average temperatures around 24°C (75°F), and some days reaching up to 32°C (90°F).
- Essentials include sunscreen, hats, swimsuits or board shorts, beachwear/sarongs, sandals, shorts, cool pants, dresses, skirts, t-shirts, and a light jacket or cardigan for the cooler evenings.
Packing for Session 2: April to August
- Winter in Cape Town is milder than many places in the Northern Hemisphere but expect some cold, wet, and rainy days.
- Average daily temperature: 17°C (62°F); evenings can drop to around 6°C (42°F).
- Since central heating is rare, warm clothing is a must!
- Pack a warm, waterproof jacket, sweatshirts, sweatpants for sleeping, jeans, a beanie or warm hat, warm slippers/socks, and some lighter clothes for those warmer days.
- Autumn is lovely: sunny and mild as it transitions into winter, especially toward late May and into June.
- Average temperature: 20-22°C (68-72°F); essentials include a warm jacket, winter clothing, summer clothes, jeans, and sweaters for cooler days.
Packing for Session 3: September to November
- Springtime weather can be variable, with some colder rainy days (mostly in September) along with lovely sunny beach days.
- For early spring (September), make sure to pack both winter and summer clothes; late spring (November) will require fewer winter items.
- Essentials for this time include a warmish jacket or rain jacket, summer clothes, sweaters, and shoes suited for wet conditions.

About the Accommodation
Security Systems & Fire Alarms
Fire Alarms
Fire Alarm – What to Do
Your house has a fire alarm system to keep everyone safe.
It’s triggered by smoke, with sensors in all bedrooms and shared areas.
If the fire alarm goes off: First, check what’s going on
- Take a moment to see if there is a fire, and whether it’s already been made safe.
- The house has fire extinguishers and a fire blanket in the kitchen if needed.
If there is a serious fire
- Leave the house immediately
- Make sure everyone else gets out too
- Call the fire department on 112 from your cellphone, and notify us on the House Whatsapp Group
- Do not go back inside the house
If there’s no fire and everything is safe
- Find the source of the smoke (often cooking)
- Ventilate the area really well: all smoke must be cleared before resetting the alarm
Resetting the Fire Alarm
Once everything is safe and smoke-free:
- Press the green reset button on the fire panel once
- Press the big round button on the fire panel six (6) times
This will turn the fire alarm off
ADT Security Alarm (Some Houses Only)
If your house also has an ADT alarm system, you ALSO must reset that alarm
- Go to the keypad near the front entrance
- Enter the code (please contact us for the code)
This will turn off the house alarm (this is automatically triggered if the fire alarm sounds)
Electric Fence Alarms
Electric Fence Alarm
If your house has an electric fence, please note that it can sometimes be triggered by strong wind or something touching the fence.
There is an Electric Fence control box with the system inside, as well as a magnetic tag.
If the electric fence alarm is triggered:
- Turn the electric fence off
- Then turn it back on again
This will reset the electric fence system.
ADT Security Alarm (Some Houses Only)
If your house also has an ADT security alarm system, you will also need to reset this alarm.
The ADT alarm is automatically triggered if the fence alarm goes off.
To reset it:
- Go to the keypad near the front entrance
- Enter the code (please contact us for the code)
This will turn off the house alarm.
House Alarms
ADT Security Alarm (Some Houses Only)
If your house has an ADT security alarm system, you may also need to reset this alarm if it is triggered by the electric fence or the fire alarm.
In addition, the ADT alarm can be triggered if one of the emergency panic buttons in the house is pressed.
If an emergency button is pressed, ADT will dispatch a response vehicle to check the house.
They will ring the bell on arrival to ensure everything is okay.
The ADT alarm is automatically triggered if:
- The electric fence alarm goes off
- The fire alarm goes off
- An emergency button is pressed in the house
How to Reset the ADT Alarm
- First make sure the fire alarm and/or electric fence alarm have been reset
- Go to the keypad near the front entrance
- Enter the code (please contact us for the code)
This will turn off the house alarm.
Electricity
Backup Power Systems
Good news: all of our houses are equipped with backup power systems. Load shedding (scheduled national power cuts) is not currently happening in South Africa, so you'll likely have uninterrupted power during your stay. That said, should load shedding ever return, or if there's an unexpected area outage, our houses are ready and the backup system will kick in automatically to keep you comfortable.
The backup systems run on batteries that are pre-charged from the grid. They provide essential power, but there is a limited amount available, so if there is ever an outage we kindly ask everyone in the house to help conserve energy.
The backup system is wired to the ceiling lights throughout the house (including bedrooms) and to kitchen plugs for essential appliances such as the kettle, toaster, and microwave. During an outage you won't be able to run power-hungry appliances like the tumble dryer, electric oven, electric stove, or heaters, but you'll still be able to charge your phone and laptop in the kitchen and communal areas.
If the system gets overloaded it will trip automatically. Don't worry: simply switch off any non-essential lights and appliances, and it should be back up in about five minutes.
You can check how much power is left by looking at the battery level indicator, and check the mains power light on the inverter to see whether grid power is on or off. If you're ever unsure, just message us and we'll help.
Managing Power in Your House
For most of our houses, electricity is billed together with your rent ($30 per month for stays of less than 4 months or R540 per month for stays of 4 months or more) and we keep the meter topped up for you, so there is nothing extra for you to arrange.
The one exception is our 317 Lower Main Road house, which runs on a prepaid meter. Guests there buy their own electricity vouchers and share the cost between the housemates (see “Recharging the House Electricity” for how to do this).
Electricity is an expensive and scarce resource in South Africa, so wherever you stay we kindly ask that you do your best to use it sparingly.

We do supply extra blankets to help you stay warm! Please let us know if you need more blankets.
Some of the homes do have Air conditioning we just ask that you use this sparingly as it uses a great deal of energy.

Blenders
Please use them to make smoothies only. Don’t use them to crush ice, grind coffee beans, make breadcrumbs, etc. This will Break them.
If you are blending ice or frozen foods into your smoothie, please make sure there is enough liquid otherwise the motor will burn out.
Do not try to stir the contents of the blender when the blades are running. If your spoon gets stuck in the blades you will break the blender and potentially hurt yourself.
Enjoying Your Time Inside
Living Safely
Never let strangers into your house, no matter how charming or convincing they are.
Never let service personnel (plumbers, electricians, etc) in unless a RAR staff member is present.
RAR will always let you know when to expect visitors.
Always keep your front door and security gates locked at all times, even if there is someone at home.
Keep your valuables away from windows and preferably out of sight.
It is a good idea to lock your room when you go out to keep your valuables safe.

Television
Each home has a Television and Netflix Setup
If you accidentally log out of the Netflix Account, please let us know so that we can come and re enter the details
This is something that one of our staff has to do in person. If it happens at night time, you will have to wait until the next day to get it resolved.
Ensuite Rooms Servicing and Ventilation
If you have an Ensuite Room - please be careful to ventilate the room adequately as the damp from the bathroom can cause mould
Also Please note that if you steam up the whole room, it can trigger the fire alarm - be sure to shower with the shower door closed to avoid that!
If you would like your ensuite room bathroom and toilet cleaned please be sure to let us know and we will include it in our cleaning protocols
Recharging the House Electricity
For most of our houses, electricity is billed additionally: it is added to your rent at $30 per month for stays of less than 4 months or R540 per month for stays of 4 months or more, so you don't need to top up a meter yourself. We keep the meter topped up for you.
The one exception is the 317 Lower Main Road house, which runs on a pre-paid electricity meter. If you are staying there, please note the following:
- Your first electricity voucher is on us and will be in your welcome pack.
- Vouchers can be purchased from your nearest grocery store (SPAR and most convenience stores sell electricity).
- You will need your meter number to buy electricity. It can be found on the electricity meter in the house.
- The 16-digit voucher number is then punched into the meter to recharge it.
- The cost of electricity is shared amongst the guests in the house, and it is up to each household to agree on a fair system.
If you are ever unsure how electricity works in your specific house, just ask us and we'll be happy to help.
Ventilating Your Room
It's very important to keep your room well ventilated. Cape Town can be damp in the Winter months and if you leave your room all closed up you may develop mould.
We recommend when you are home making sure you open windows and the door and keep the room ventilated
We also recommend in the winter months that you run your room fan when you are out for the day - this will circulate the air and prevent mould
If you do see any mould please notify us immediately and we will treat your room to prevent it developing
Housing WhatsApp Groups
You will be added to your relevant housing WhatsApp group when you arrive. There is also a QR Code to add yourself to the group.
You can use this group to communicate with RAR staff regarding any issues in your house. For example:
Leaking taps
Lost keys
Alarms going off
Broken appliances
Please be respectful and polite with your language when making use of the group
Unless it is an emergency, please send your messages related to housing issues to RAR staff during business hours only. For example:
A burst pipe and flooding bathroom is an emergency.
A dripping tap is NOT an emergency.
You will need to message this group to let us know when you have mistakenly set the alarm off so we can let the security company know.
Enjoying Your Time Outside
There is an outdoor braai available for your use. Please make sure you are very careful with flames when having a braai and be sure to put it out after use.
Cleaning Service
House Cleaning
All of our homes are cleaned at least twice a week. The cleaning service covers all the common areas and the bathrooms, so the shared spaces stay fresh and comfortable for everyone in the house.
Please note that we do not wash dishes, so be sure to wash your own dirty dishes and keep the kitchen tidy for your housemates. Keeping your own room neat between cleans also helps everyone enjoy the space.
Linen Service
Fresh linen is available on request, free of charge. Whenever you would like a fresh set, just message us and we'll sort out a swap for you.
When you get in touch, please include your name, your house, and your room number, along with what you would like to exchange. A full linen swap includes a duvet cover (not the inner), pillowcases, and a fitted sheet (not the mattress cover).
You can then collect the fresh linen from our offices. Please remember to bring the dirty items you would like to exchange so we can swap them for clean ones.

Safety Info & House Rules
Your Responsibilities
Common Spaces
Shared Spaces & Dishes
All common areas are cleaned and maintained by our team to keep the house comfortable for everyone.
We do ask, however, that you wash your own dishes after use. Leaving dirty dishes can attract unwelcome insects and vermin, which affects everyone in the house.
A quick wash after using the kitchen helps keep the space clean, hygienic, and pleasant for all
Thank you for doing your part!
Your Room
Your Room & Personal Space
We provide you with a pristine room in a shared house, and your room is your personal responsibility during your stay.
Please keep it clean, tidy, and well-ventilated so it remains mould-free. This is your private space to look after.
If the room is returned in poor condition, we may need to invoice for any damage, including repainting, especially if the room has been kept closed and develops mould. One suggestion is to leave your desk fan running during the day to increase airflow in the room in the winter months when mould can develop.
Bedding & Linen
All bedding is handed over in a perfectly clean condition.
If the bedding is not washed during your stay, we will need to charge for a fresh set at check-out.
If washing your bedding is difficult or impractical, no problem, we offer a bi-weekly linen exchange. Just let us know and we’ll provide fresh, clean linens for you.
Ensuite Bathrooms (If Applicable)
If your room has an ensuite bathroom, this is also your private space and should be kept clean.
If you’d like help, we’re happy to arrange a bathroom cleaning service. Just let us know and we’ll take care of it for you.
Rules & Regulations
Quiet Times
Respect for Our Community
We are located in a friendly and welcoming community. While you may be here for a short time, Observatory is also home to many full time residents.
We kindly ask that you respect our neighbours’ privacy and their right to a peaceful living environment.
In particular, quiet hours are between 10:00 PM and 8:00 AM, during which time noise should be kept to a minimum.
Thank you for helping us maintain a positive relationship with the local community.
Breakages
Accidental Damage
We understand that accidents sometimes happen.
If you accidentally break or damage something, please let us know as soon as possible.
- For minor items, we will usually not charge.
- For larger items (for example, a TV screen), we will discuss and agree on the cost with you before you leave, to avoid any issues later. We do have insurance to help with these things but we need to know about it as early as possible to process a claim.
If damage occurs and no one takes responsibility, the cost will unfortunately have to be shared equally by everyone in the house.
Thank you for your honesty and cooperation. It helps us keep the house in good condition for everyone.
Smoking Policy
Smoke-Free Home
This is a strictly smoke-free home, including all outdoor areas surrounding the property.
Smoking or vaping of any substance is not permitted anywhere on the property.
Please note: This also includes incense, candles, or burning anything indoors, as this can easily trigger the fire alarm.
Thank you for helping us keep the house clean, healthy, and comfortable for everyone
Pets
Pets
We love animals, however our homes are pet-free. This is due to many guests having pet allergies.
We kindly ask that you respect this policy and do not bring animals into the house.
Thank you for your understanding.
False Alarm Charges
ADT Alarm Call-Out Charges
Please note that homes fitted with an ADT alarm system are monitored as a paid service.
If the fire alarm sounds or an emergency panic button is pressed, ADT is required to send a patrol vehicle to check on the property.
If there is a genuine emergency, this service exists to ensure your safety.
However, if the activation is found to be a false alarm, the call-out fee of R100 per incident will be charged and shared by the household.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
No Parties
To keep things comfortable for everyone in the house and for our neighbours in the community, parties are not allowed at any of our properties.
You're very welcome to relax and enjoy the shared spaces with your housemates, but large gatherings and parties aren't permitted. Please also keep noise down during quiet hours, which are between 10:00 PM and 8:00 AM. This helps us maintain a good relationship with the local community and keeps the home pleasant for all the guests who live here. Thank you for your understanding.
Overnight Guests
Our houses are shared homes, so we ask that you check with us before having any overnight guests. Overnight guests are not permitted without our prior permission.
This helps us keep everyone in the house safe and comfortable, and it's fair to your housemates who share the communal spaces. If you would like a visitor to stay over, just get in touch with us beforehand and we'll let you know what's possible. Thank you for respecting your housemates and helping us look after the home.

- Always tell someone where you’re going, which route you plan to take, and when you expect to be back
- Carry a fully charged cellphone so you can make calls if needed
- Take enough water, snacks, sunblock, and warm clothing

What to Do If…
An Alarm Goes Off
I Think It's the Fire Alarm
Immediately determine the source of the fire and if it is possible extinguish the fire with the available fire blanket / extinguishers.
If it is from Cooking / Electrical / Related to the Inverter System DO NOT USE WATER ON THE FIRE.
If The Fire Cannot be put out Please Get Everybody out of the house and to safety.
If The Fire is Out and All is Safe Then :
- Ventilate the Smoke (the alarm will go off again if you don't do this)
- Follow The Detailed Instructions to turn off the Fire Alarm on the Fire Panel - Green Button Once and big Silver Button 6 times
- If The House has an Alarm System, then you must Disarm the House Alarm after turning off the Fire Alarm - the code (please contact us for the code) into the Alarm Panel
I Think It's the Fence Alarm
The Freestanding Homes we operate have Electric Fences for security. Those Fences have their own built in Alarm System Which will trigger if something touches the fence.
To check if the Fence has been triggered you can check the Fence Box outside, and reset it using the Magnet that is next to it.
Once it is disabled then you can go inside and disable the house Alarm
I Think It's the House Alarm (Emergency Button Pressed)
The Freestanding Homes All have Alarm Systems.
These can be triggered if someone accidentally presses one of the Emergency Buttons in the house by Mistake.
If Someone pressed the emergency button then you can disarm at the house alarm panel by the door - enter the code (please contact us for the code)
If the Fence alarm / Fire Alarm has gone off, then you must first disarm the Fence or Fire Alarm and then Disarm the House Alarm

You can change the old one to the new one:
- Close the existing Gas Bottle

- Carefully Connect the New Gas Bottle
- Turn on the gas
NOTE - If you smell gas leaking / are concerned you can't change the gas yourself rather shut off all the gas and send us a message to come to help.
The WiFi Is Slow or Not Working
WiFi Reset Instructions
If the WiFi connection drops, please try the following:
- Locate the switch under the equipment box marked “Reset WiFi.”
If you cannot find the switch, please contact us. - Turn the switch off, wait a few seconds, and then turn it back on.
- The system will take about one minute to power back up.
Once restarted, the connection should work normally again.
Important notes:
- Please do not reset the system repeatedly in a short period.
- If the system needs to be reset more than twice in one day, please notify us.
- If resetting does not resolve the issue, contact Rent-A-Room for assistance.
The Power Goes Out
If the power goes out, here's how to work out what's happening:
First, check the power meter box. At the 317 Lower Main Road house (our only prepaid house), if the meter reads 0 it means the electricity has run out and a voucher needs to be loaded to recharge it. In all our other houses electricity is billed additionally and added to your rent, so this won't apply to you.
If the meter is completely blank, there is no power supply reaching the house. This is usually an unexpected area outage (or, very occasionally, load shedding if it has returned). Load shedding is not currently active in South Africa, so this is unlikely, but if it happens please message us so we know.
If there is power at the meter but no power in the house, check the switchboard. Look for any switches that have tripped (flipped down) and try to push them back up. Do not hold a switch up: switches trip when there is an overload or a short. If a switch trips again, unplug whatever may have caused it and try once more.
If none of that resolves it, please contact us and we'll help straight away.
I Saw a Bug or Rodent
I Saw a Cockroach
All our homes are regularly fumigated but every now and then one of these bugs will show up - please let us know immediately so that we can have the place treated.
Please also be very aware that leaving any food waste lying around is what invites these unwanted guests to visit so always clean up food and wash dishes to keep the place clean
I Saw a Mouse
We live in a big city and occasionally one of these unwanted creatures will show up. Please let us know immediately and we can treat the property.
Please don't leave out food waste / unwashed dishes and food stuffs as these attract unwanted visitors from outside.
Making a Difference
Environmental Sustainability
Heat Pump Dryers
Rent-A-Room’s Adoption of Heat Pump Dryers: Energy Efficiency for a Sustainable Future
At Rent-A-Room, sustainability isn’t just a goal, it’s a principle guiding our operations. As part of our ongoing commitment to energy efficiency and environmental stewardship, we’ve embraced heat pump dryers as a smarter, greener alternative to traditional drying solutions. Here’s why this innovation matters:
What Are Heat Pump Dryers?
Heat pump dryers are cutting-edge appliances that use advanced technology to dry clothes efficiently while consuming significantly less energy than conventional dryers. Instead of releasing warm air as waste, they recycle it within a closed system, maintaining low energy consumption and reducing heat loss.
Why Heat Pump Dryers at Rent-A-Room?
- Significant Energy Savings
Heat pump dryers use up to 50% less energy than traditional dryers, aligning perfectly with our mission to reduce energy consumption. This not only lowers operational costs but also contributes to a more sustainable living environment for our tenants. - Gentle on Clothes
By operating at lower temperatures, heat pump dryers are gentler on fabrics, extending the life of clothes and ensuring they stay in great condition. This feature benefits our tenants by preserving their garments while still delivering excellent drying performance. - Environmentally Friendly
The energy-efficient nature of heat pump dryers means a reduced carbon footprint. By incorporating these dryers across our properties, Rent-A-Room is actively contributing to the fight against climate change. - Cost-Effective for Tenants
Energy savings translate to lower utility bills, offering an added financial benefit to our tenants. Heat pump dryers provide a win-win solution: eco-friendly drying that’s also budget-friendly. - Noise Reduction
Heat pump dryers operate quietly, enhancing the comfort and convenience of our living spaces, especially in shared or urban environments.
The Bigger Picture
At Rent-A-Room, we’re always looking for innovative ways to combine comfort, convenience, and sustainability. By adopting heat pump dryers, we’re not only enhancing the living experience for our tenants but also setting a standard for environmentally responsible property management.
Rent-A-Room’s Commitment to a Greener Tomorrow
Our investment in heat pump dryers reflects a broader commitment to energy-efficient technologies. From solar panels to natural gas cooking solutions and now heat pump dryers, Rent-A-Room is redefining sustainable living. Together, we’re creating a better, greener future, one small step at a time.
Solar Energy Initiatives
Rent-A-Room's Solar Energy Initiatives: A Commitment to Sustainable Living
At Rent-A-Room, we believe that sustainability is more than just a buzzword, it’s a responsibility. Our solar energy initiatives reflect our commitment to reducing our environmental footprint while enhancing the quality of life for our tenants. Here’s how we’re making a difference:
Powering with Solar Panels
Harnessing the sun's abundant energy, our solar panels provide a reliable and renewable source of electricity for our properties. These panels not only reduce dependency on conventional energy sources but also contribute to lowering carbon emissions. By using solar power, we’re ensuring that our tenants have access to sustainable energy solutions, even during times of grid instability.
Heating Water with Solar Geysers
Hot water is a necessity, and at Rent-A-Room, we’re heating it the eco-friendly way. Our solar geysers use the sun’s energy to provide warm water for our tenants, reducing reliance on electricity or other fossil fuels. This energy-efficient system is not only environmentally friendly but also cost-effective, ensuring sustainable comfort for everyone.
Cooking with Natural Gas
For cooking, we’ve adopted the use of natural gas, a cleaner alternative to traditional electricity-powered stoves. Natural gas is not only more energy-efficient but also reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to other fossil fuels. This solution allows our tenants to cook with precision and reliability while knowing they’re contributing to a greener planet.
Why It Matters
By integrating solar panels, solar geysers, and natural gas into our properties, Rent-A-Room is taking tangible steps toward a more sustainable future. These initiatives reduce energy costs, enhance energy efficiency, and minimise the environmental impact of our operations.
Our tenants benefit from:
- Reliable power sourced from the sun.
- Eco-friendly hot water systems.
- Efficient and sustainable cooking solutions.
At Rent-A-Room, we’re proud to champion sustainable living through innovative energy solutions. Together, we can create a cleaner, greener future, one property at a time.
Water Conservation
Water-Saving Tips for Rent-A-Room Guests: Being Waterwise in Cape Town
Cape Town is a beautiful city, but it’s also a water-scarce region where every drop counts. At Rent-A-Room, we’re committed to sustainability, and we encourage our guests to adopt water-saving habits. Here are some simple yet impactful ways to be waterwise:
In the Bathroom
- Shorten Your Showers:
- Keep showers under 2 minutes. Use a timer or play a short song to keep track of time.
- Turn Off the Tap:
- Don’t let the water run while brushing your teeth, shaving, or washing your hands.
- Use Water Efficiently:
- When flushing, use the half-flush option if available, and avoid flushing unnecessarily.
In the Kitchen
- Wash Dishes Wisely:
- Fill the sink with water to wash dishes instead of running the tap continuously.
- If you have a dishwasher, only run it when it’s fully loaded.
- Save Excess Water:
- Use leftover water from rinsing fruits and vegetables to water plants.
Laundry
- Do Full Loads:
- Only run the washing machine when you have a full load to maximise water efficiency.
- Spot Clean Small Stains:
- Avoid washing lightly soiled items unnecessarily by spot-cleaning them instead.
General Tips
- Report Leaks:
- If you notice a dripping tap or leaking pipe, report it to Rent-A-Room immediately so it can be fixed.
- Reuse Towels:
- Use your towels multiple times before washing to save water and energy.
Why It Matters
Being waterwise in Cape Town isn’t just about following rules; it’s about preserving one of the city’s most precious resources. Every small effort you make helps ensure there’s enough water for everyone while protecting the environment.
Together, we can make a big difference, one drop at a time. Thank you for helping Rent-A-Room lead the way in sustainable living!
Being Socially Responsible
Guidelines for Responsible Giving
- Avoid Giving Money Directly:
- While it may feel helpful in the moment, giving cash can sometimes fuel harmful behaviours or discourage individuals from seeking sustainable support.
- Do Not Respond to Doorbell Requests:
- If someone rings your bell asking for money or assistance, it’s best not to engage. This helps maintain personal safety and avoids encouraging repeat solicitations.
- Support Local Charities and Organisations:
- Contribute to trusted local organisations that provide structured support such as food, shelter, and skills training. Some excellent options in Cape Town include:
- The Haven Night Shelter: Offers safe accommodation and resources for the homeless.
- Ladles of Love: Provides meals to vulnerable communities.
- ObsCAN (Observatory Community Action Network): A local network supporting sustainable aid projects.
- Contribute to trusted local organisations that provide structured support such as food, shelter, and skills training. Some excellent options in Cape Town include:
- Offer Food or Essentials Instead of Cash:
- If you want to help directly, consider giving non-perishable food items, clothing, or hygiene products rather than money.
- Volunteer Your Time:
- Get involved with community organisations to make a lasting impact. Your time and skills can often do more good than a monetary donation.
- Stay Informed:
- Learn about the root causes of homelessness and poverty in the area to better understand how your contributions can create sustainable change.
A Safer, Healthier Community
By giving responsibly, you’re contributing to a safer and healthier community in Observatory. Your thoughtful actions help ensure that those in need receive the support they require in a way that promotes dignity and long-term well-being.
Thank you for being part of the solution and helping Rent-A-Room foster a compassionate and sustainable community. Together, we can make a positive difference!
